In the first four months of 2014 Chilean seafood and aquaculture product export reached a value of USD 2,145 million, 27.5 per cent more compared to the same period of 2013, when USD 1,682 million was obtained.
However, the exported volume experienced a decline of 8 per cent, changing from 473,600 -- in 2013 -- to 435,700 tonnes this year, the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA) reported.
Frozen products were those that had higher participation in the exported volume, as they accounted for 54.3 per cent of the total. They were followed by fishmeal, chilled fresh products and dried seaweed, as it has been indicated in the latest Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector Report issued by SUBPESCA.
According to statistics from SUBPESCA, the main exported product was Atlantic salmon, which accounted for 47 per cent (USD 100.8 million) of the revenues from sales abroad. Further back Pacific salmon (16.7 per cent of the total) and rainbow trout were located.
Chilean products were destined for 92 countries, of which the nine main ones accounted for 79.8 per cent of total exports. Among them the ones that stood out were the United States, Japan, Brazil, China and Russia.
With respect to the capture sector, the accumulated value of fish exports (177,700 tonnes) between January and April 2014 reached USD 385.2 million.
In the first four months 79,700 tonnes of fishmeal were sold abroad for USD 116.5 million while a year earlier 87,600 tonnes had been exported for USD 161.9 million.
The most important destinations of fishmeal were China, South Korea, Spain, Japan and Italy.
Out of the total exported fishmeal, 62.6 per cent had prime quality, 17.8 per cent was super prime and 18.8 per cent was standard.
Sales of frozen seafood products abroad totalled USD 144.6 million, which represented a decrease of 9.1 per cent compared to the same period in 2013. These products were mainly sent to Nigeria, the United States and South Korea, which accounted for 22.9 per cent, 14.8 per cent and 9.8 per cent, respectively.
As for fresh chilled products, the sales in the first four months of 2014 amounted to USD 537.8 million, 47.4 per cent higher than a year earlier.
In addition, between January and April 2014, a total of 62,400 tonnes of fresh chilled resources was exported, that is to say, 13.6 per cent more than in the same period in 2013.
The Aquaculture sector exports accounted for 82 per cent of the total value of sales abroad and 59.2 per cent of total exports in the first four months of this year, with USD 1,760 million and about 258,000 tonnes.
