Agri-food and bio-resource development company, Perennia Food and Agriculture Inc. has signed an agreement with Matis Ltd. of Reykjavik to support the innovative and progressive growth of Nova Scotia's agri-food and seafood sector.
“We are very excited about this agreement and what it can do to connect industry with leading edge knowledge, technologies and access to new markets,” said Perennia CEO Jo Ann Fewer from Iceland, where the agreement was signed.

“Matis and Perennia have complementary mandates to make food and food support more profitable through cutting edge research and development, new value added products and innovative ideas. The fact that we will have access to such unique and top notch expertise, and for Matis to be talking about Perennia and Nova Scotia to their domestic and international clients will only lead to great things for Nova Scotia.”
The agreement's main objective is to strengthen the research and development capacity at both Perennia and Matis in the areas of fisheries, agriculture, aquaculture, biotechnology and food. It commits both parties to work on mutual local, national and international projects together, to share personnel and cross promote services.
“Matis has been supporting innovation in the Icelandic seafood industry for a long time,” said Matis CEO Sveinn Margeirsson. “We have been an active participant in the European bioeconomy research and innovation arena in the past years and see a lot of potential in increased collaboration with Nova Scotia. We are confident that Atlantic Canada and the rest of the coastal areas around the Atlantic have great opportunities to increase the value of Atlantic seafood in the years to come. Perennia can play a key role that development for Nova Scotia and I am looking forward to the collaboration.”
Margeirsson will be spending some time in Nova Scotia to further develop relationships with aligned agencies, companies and academic institutions.
